Embracing Lenten Practices with Jesus Christ

Writer: Louisa MastromarinoLouisa Mastromarino

Lent is a significant period for Christians, serving as a time of reflection, sacrifice, and spiritual growth. Engaging in Lenten practices rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ can deepen one's faith and enhance the understanding of His message.

**Fasting and Abstinence**

One traditional practice during Lent is fasting, which symbolizes the self-discipline Jesus exemplified during His 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11, New International Version). Fasting invites believers to forgo certain foods or indulge in minimalist diets, helping them focus their thoughts and prayers on Jesus’ sacrifice.

**Prayer and Meditation**

Prayer is another cornerstone of Lenten observance. Engaging in daily prayer allows followers to connect with God and reflect on Jesus' teachings. As noted by St. Teresa of Avila, “Prayer is an act of love” (Teresa, 2000). Setting aside time for meditation encourages a deeper communion with Christ’s spirit.

**Acts of Kindness**

Lent is also a time for generosity. The practice of almsgiving, or charitable acts, embodies the love Jesus demonstrated throughout His life. In Matthew 25:35-40, Jesus highlights the importance of serving others, reinforcing the notion that caring for the needy is akin to serving Him.

**Pray the Rosary**

During Lent, dedicate time for daily Rosary prayers, reflecting on the Sufferings of Christ. Incorporate intentions for deepen faith and personal sacrifice. Use the Mysteries of the Rosary to meditate on key events of Jesus' passion, fostering a sense of spiritual growth and connection throughout the season.

By integrating fasting, prayer, and acts of kindness into Lenten routines, individuals can walk more closely with Jesus Christ. As believers embark on this journey, they are reminded of His ultimate sacrifice and are invited to reflect it in their daily lives.
